Meet Our Longacres Horses
Return to
Longacres Home PageUPDATING for 2008 soon! (12-7-07) -
Check back here over the coming weeks as we update the "Meet the Horses" page for the new year. We'll be deleting some pictures and profiles of horses that we've sold or retired, and we'll add pictures and information for horses that were at Longacres for the first time this year.
We also hope to get YOUR descriptions to add to the profiles - send via email!
Horses you will meet at Longacres:
We usually have nine resident students and several instructors and assistant instructor/trainers riding at Longacres. For these riders we usually have between 20 and 30 horses in the barn including 15 or 16 owned by Longacres, another 8 or 10 that are here temporarily for further training, and several horses owned privately by our students. This page will introduce you to some of the horses that were here during the summers of 2006 and 2007. There is always change in the herd from year to year. We have a core of horses that have been with us many years and are old friends. Almost every year one or more get too old to work regularly and must be retired. And every year we have new comers - some young horses we buy ourselves, and others that come to us for our "send your horse to camp" training program.
Check Out the Jumps!
The action pictures of all the horses on these pages were mostly taken on our big jumping course. Check out our nice jumps while you look over the horses in action!

Quantum with Emmy Show Name: "Quantum Leap" Quantum is one of our most powerful jumpers. 4'6" jumps are fun for him! He is usually ridden by one or two of our best riders, but most of you will have a chance to get on and feel his power sometime during your stay at Longacres! He is large and powerful but very gentle to handle. His show name comes from the exact definition of Quantum and his well displayed leaps of extra energy he shows every now and then. Helps to keep a rider on their toes! He was bought when he was about 8 years old. He has learned to jump and compete well in the ring since then.

Peppermint Patti with Tovah and others! This picture was taken at Erie County Fair "A" rated horse show in the summer of 2003. Many of the ribbons on the far left were won by "Patti". Show Name: "Peppermint Patti " Peppermint Patti is an older TB cross Mare who has certainly made a name for herself in the Western New York show circuit! She has been a champion year after year in the Jumper ring. It is obvious by the look in her eye that she LOVES to jump when she hears the buzzer go off. She is very powerful as she is eager to go, go, and GO! She is very strong so only more advanced riders are able to ride her. Patti has wonderful barn manners and is a pure pleasure to handle. Patti is also an awesome lead trail horse who isn't bothered by anything! She has been a part of Longacres since she was very young.
Please follow the below link to read "The Miracle of Peppermint Patti" as she has surprised us all! |

Merlin with Jess Show Names: "Tickled Pink" or "One in a Million" Merlin is a part Arab Gelding, about 14.3 hands. He 7 years old and has been a favorite of many riders probably because he is obvioulsly adorable.! He does have an exuding personality to match his looks. : ) He was broken and trained here at Longacres since he was 3 years old. He has been shown in the hunter ring and just started to do puddle jumpers. Merlin can be a little skiddish sometimes so he makes an ok, but not great trail horse.
|
|
Joker with Tovah (new horse in 2005)
Show Name: "Broad Strokes" Joker was injured at his winter home last winter and we had to retire him from jumping and showing. We were able to save his life after a long term care effort, and he will live out his days as a western trail horse at his retirement home. We keep his picture here this season as a tribute to a fine horse!

Horatio with Emily (new horse in 2005) Show Name: "Against All Odds" Horatio was purchased in 2005 and didn’t know how to jump. But that didn’t bother us at all. His main attraction to being added to the Longacres fleet was his extremely calm nature for being such a young TB. He loves people almost more than horses it seems. We knew this would make him easy to train. He took to jumping in no time and just always seems to be saying "What do you want me to do? Should I do more?!" He has natural form to make him a great hunter. We are anxious to see how he excels in shows as he continues to be polished up! He is an ex-race horse but please don’t ask him about it – he’s sensitive. He was very slow – he seems to like the Longacres regime much more! He also seems to be a great trail horse since he is so calm natured.
|
|
|
Sha-bang with Erika Show Name: "The Whole Sha-bang" Sha-bang is still a fairly young Thoroughbred Gelding off the race track. He is one of our most flashy show hunters and has won numerous ribbons and some Championships with Longacres. He is as sweet to handle as he is handsome. Sha-bang used to get nervous sometimes with a rider who didn’t have very soft hands. He has seemed to mature and calm down a little with age. He has been a good hunter for us but he has really been finding his way in the jumper ring over the last 2 summers. Sha-bang had really shown potential for high jumping and we called him to the task! He is showing us he has it in him. Just this last season we were especially pleased to see how forgiving he can be to a rider when they get him to a bad spot around a corner. He just reaches for it anyway when it seems like it would be awfully akward for him! But that is his true personality shining through. Sha-Bang is not an ideal trail horse. He gets just a little too nervous sometimes.
|
|
|
Bobert with Mandy Show Name: "DiscomBOBulated" Bobert is one of our older TB Geldings who is a complete gentleman. He'll do anything he's asked, from X rails jumping to more advanced hunter. We wish we had ten of him! He has been at Longacres for about 7 years. Not one of our fancier show horses but is just a great all around lesson horse. Bobert is also a fine trail horse. Bobert has no issues besides needing a little extra kick now and then to get moving! Yes, he has a strange name but there is a story behind it at least!! Ask Meghan when you come and she’ll share it with you.

|
Zanzibar with Brianna (new horse in 2005) Show Name: "In Retrospect" Zanzibar is a 12 year old Chestnut Paint Mare who spent most of her life being a brood mare before Longacres purchased her in 2005. She was purchased because she was as patient as can be while being tacked up and showed great potential when she was being jumped. She has lived up to what we thought we saw in her that spring. She remains a steady, calm mare to deal with in the barn who almost seems like she is falling asleep in the aisle. But when you get her in the ring she seems to just come to life! She goes from looking pokey in the barn to looking full of herself as she moves around the ring! She has proven to be a great show horse. She remains calm in the show environment but looks flashy in the ring! Perfect combination. Riders at many different levels can ride AND enjoy her! She makes a great trail horse but doesn’t like to be leaving her buddies in the barn if she is the only one going on the trail!

|
Ginger with Michelle (New Large Pony in 2004) Show Name: "Lasting Impression" Ginger is a young 14’3 Sorrel Pony Mare who came to Longacres never having jumped a day in her life. Although one wouldn’t know by looking at the picture to the left! That picture was taken the first day or two of her jumping!! The potential we saw in her became blatently clear when she was taken up to the field to merely look around her first day. The plan was to just let her sniff around and to just look around and get used to her new home. Well, she seemed to have her own plan and just took to the jumping immediately! She has issues in the barn and we take extra steps to avoid her "witchiness" when feeding or tacking up. But on the other hand she is a wonderful pony to ride and show and that makes her very worthwhile! |
|
|
Jenna with Shelly (Privately owned) Show Name: "Devil Horns" Jenna is Shelly K’s private horse. Shelly bought Jenna while she was at Longacres in 2004 and took her home to Maryland. Shelly brings Jenna a/k/a Devil Horns, to Longacres in the summer and enjoys great success with her in the jumper classes! Shelly will soon probably contribute her own horse description. |
|
|
|
|
|
Brody with Mary
Show Name: " Last Enchantment" Brody was a private horse sent to Longacres for training and for sale in 2006.
|
|
|
Justin with Mary Kate Show Name: "Just InFailable" (Campers tend to choose "Captain Morgan" instead!) Justin is a young TB Gelding off the track. He has very comfortable gaits and a wonderful personality that wins him many friends. He has an old injury to a hock, so sometimes goes lame for short periods and needs rest. He is shown in the hunter ring mostly and is supremely pleasant to ride on the flat. Not many bad things to say about Justin besides his occasional lameness and that fact that he just isn’t ideal for trails.
|
|
|
Star with Marce Show Name: "Wishful Thinking" Star is one of our greatest show ponies. She is 9 and a large 14.2 Paint/Mustang Pony Mare. Star is flashy and a great mover and jumper. Star won her first blue ribbon in a "A" show in 2004 at the Erie Co. Fair. She is very sweet tempered to handle. She is also good on trails. Star does like to challenge a rider a little now and then so be ready. Each year she seems so grow a little more out of it but she can show her stubborn side.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Brownie with Peyton Show Name: "Charlie Brown" or "Pony Express" Brownie has another well known name - "The greatest pony in the world"!! It is well earned! This older Morgan Gelding is still a wonderful ride suitable for beginners to advanced riders. Brownie has spent a lifetime of summers at Longacres. He is extremely versatile in every way. He is a great tool for young riders to learn on and yet can do puddle jumpers too. We are pretty easy on him in his later years now though! Brownie has been an incredible asset to the camp and has won championships over and over again. This is NOTHING to complain about him! Brownie is the oldest horse we have in the barn but you really can’t tell by looking at him. Several people this last summer were shocked to hear his age, they mistook him for being 14 or 15years old. Let’s hope his "energizer bunny" genes keep going, and going!!!
|
|
|
Ebony with Brianna Show Name: "Tsk, Tsk" Ebony is an 8 year old Quarterhorse Mare who can be a little witchy in the barn during feed time but makes up for it in the ring! She has continued to show immense progress every season as she mellows out in age. Going over 4 years now at Longacres has been really good for her training. Tovah and others spent a lot of time with her the first 2 years. Brianna rode Ebony to the South Towns Summer Series Puddle Jumper Championship and won in 2005. In the off season her mare-ish attitude seems to settle down. She seems easier to handle one on one when there is less commotion. She reacts well to there being not as many people or horses as there is during camp! She is very good on trails.
|
|
|
Aleeta with Kim (New Horse in 2006) Show Name: "Moon Dancer" NOTE: Aleeta was sold in 2007 Aleeta is a Thouroughbred mare that is showing us the potential she really has to offer - whether late in her years or not! She was purchased from a wonderful family who handled her for years but didn't ride her very much. Her real career has begun at Longacres in 2006. A kind, gentle sweetheart to handle in the barn with some serious energy to burn during the lessons . . . . The riders who get to be on her back are a little limited as she is really in the midst of being trained. We are still learning all she has to offer - stay tuned! She is a good trail horse. |
|
|
Kingsley with Mady (New Horse in 2006) Show Name: "Take 5" Kingsley is an older gelding who LOVES to try and persuade us he is nowhere near his real age! He has a real thick old- style quarterhorse build. With his thick neck and long mane (we don't have the heart to pull it . . ..!) he fools us into thinking he would pass off well for a western trail blazer. But these pictures will show you he knows how to show off when competing! Kingsley is a horse that can be pretty calm for inexperienced riders while at the same time can lift those knees and ears perfectly for the intermediate hunter classes. He is a real big puppy to handle and loves attention. He is a good trail horse.

Post Peppermint Pattie Stuff here:
Below article was written by Director Tom Kranz:
The Miracle of Peppermint Patti:
In the 2003 season, Patti was 21 years old. She's a bay mare just about 16 hands tall. She is a great horse to take on a trail ride, but her purpose in life is to enter show jumping classes, almost automatically go clean in the first round, then move on to the jump-off round and run and turn like the wind!
I was chatting with some of our students last summer and asked them what they liked most about Longacres. One of them answered, "At Longacres girls who don't own their own horses have a chance to ride REAL show horses - not just your usual lesson horses."
Peppermint Patti is a dramatic example of this opportunity. I can think of six different 2003 LA students who had a chance to ride Patti in shows this past season. ALL of them won ribbons, mostly blue!
Peppermint Patti has had an extraordinary showing career, winning just about every possible show jumper Season Championship in western New York over the past 15 years. She has been a champion at Erie County Fair "A" rated show (again this year, and grand champion in the highest jumping division several years ago). She has been Summer Show Series season jumper champion numerous times. She has been season champion of the Buffalo Winter Show Series. This is a very special horse. Longacres has owned her since she was three years old and she learned to jump her first X-rail in our own training rings.
The Patti Miracle:
Show jumping puts some stress on a horse, and it is not uncommon for jumpers to develop soundness issues as they get older. As she got to her mid-teens, Peppermint Patti started to show some signs of arthritus in her hocks. By the end of the 1999 summer season, Patti began to come up quite lame fairly often. With rest she could be ridden again, but things did not look promising. At the beginning of the summer in 2000 Patti went badly lame. We did extensive X-rays and vet diagnostics. The diagnosis was advancing arthritus. We treated her in the usual ways, with various drugs and injections. Results were not good. Patti spent most of 2000 and 2001 resting and doing some light trail riding during periods when she was feeling better. During one period in 2001 when she seemed a little better we actually put her in a very low jumper class just for old times sake. At this very low height she did well and showed she had not lost her "heart", but she came up lame again soon after this effort.
In the fall of 2001 we seriously considered whether the sad time had come to "put Patti down" to make sure she did not suffer pain as her arthritus got worse. But we found a good winter home that promised to let Patti spend many hours grazing in a nice pasture and occasionally go out for a light trail ride if she seemed up to it. We decided to give her this final winter and evaluate her level of discomfort in the spring.
Spring 2002 - Miracle Time!
Patti was vanned back to Longacres in the spring of 2002 and I went down to the barn to see how much worse her arthritus had become over the winter. When I got to the pasture, Patti was GALLOPING AROUND THE field with her tail in the air! Once in a while an older horse suffering from arthritic conditions will experience a fusing of the hock joints around the irritated joint and become sound again. They are sometimes very useful again at least for gentle trail rides.
Over the following few weeks we very gradually gave Patti more and more exercise. Nothing fazed her! A miraculous cure. We started to show Peppermint Patti again in the summer of 2002 and it was as though she had never left the show ring. Peppermint Patti won again and again in jumper classes over the 2002 season, and came back even stronger this past summer for the 2003 horse show season.
Patti has a good winter home where she gets only very light work this winter. We hope she has a couple more years of show success giving memorable rides to Longacres students. At her age, the arthritus could recur, but the past two years have been wonderful - a true gift!
More about Patti from her riders:
-
From Marce: Peppermint Patti:
Hands down the awesomest show jumper mare ever, or at least my personal favorite! She can be a hard horse to handle simply because she has the go-go-go jumper mentality, but as she is getting older she is calming down a lot. When she is listening she turns like a snake and somehow manages to get her hooves out of the way as she turns in mid-air! Has had arthiritis problems the past couple of summers that kept her out of action, but Summer 2002 was awesome - she won many many show jumper classes anywhere from 2'3-3'3 with me, Tovah & Nora, including back-to-back division championships at the A-rated Erie County Fair show (2'9-3' division with me, and 3'-3'3 division with Tovah). As a side note, in the pasture she loves the geldings, but only big bays like Quantum, Shebang & Justin - she hates chestnuts (just ask Danielle's horse Freddie!).
More from Tovah: Patti- Patti is an incredible horse. She is an older mare who knows her job as a jumper, and thoroughly enjoys it. She is probably the most experienced jumper I have ever ridden, and it shows. You can totally miss a spot to a jump with her and be sure that you are going to crash through it, but Patti somehow manages to get her legs up and out of the way. Patti can go fast when she needs to and collect to make tight turns during jumper courses. It is a nice feeling when you go into a jumper class on Patti… knowing that the chances of winning are good! Patti is one of Longacres’ great jumpers and anyone who has the chance to ride her is lucky! PS: (Note from Tom) - Tovah is serious when she tells you that you know you have a chance to WIN every time you go in the ring with her. This summer (2003) at the Erie County Fair several different girls were given the chance to show Patti. All got ribbons, but after the second day of showing, Longacres had yet to win a blue ribbon. I got the girls together and told them I was glad they all had a chance to try this great horse, but it was time for Longacres to try to rack up a blue ribbon. I said, "I think Tovah on Patti give us the best chance to win, so I am going to let her ride Patti in the final two jumper classes of the show."
There were 18 horses in one of those classes and 19 in the next. Tovah and Patti enterer the ring for the first class, and WHAM! - first place out of 18. One class to go before the end of the show, and "BAM!", Tovah and Patti first again out of 19 horses!
Pattie - Peppermint Pattie
Patti is another very energetic horse who is a very fun ride! She is also amazing jumper, and she and Emily Peterman did well at the Quaker Field show in jumpers. She's a been there, done that, kind of horse, according to Shelly.
-submitted by Jr.Co. Emmy with input from campers during the summer of 2006
Merlin is way far definitely the cutest pony you will ever in you life meet,
hands down!! I had sooo much fun riding him this summer, and especially
showing him jumpers, he may be small but that little pony can book! He has a
big, big heart and does anything you ask him :)
-Submitted by Jr. Counselor Emmy H. fall of ’06
Merlin a.k.a - "FAVORITE,BEST, MOST BEAUTIFUL GREAT BOY AT HORSE SHOWS, ETC.!" -submitted by Amanda E. in the fall of ’06 from 10 year old camper
Merlin - One in a Million
Merlin is an adorable pony with Arabian flair who also jumps very well and is very sweet. He loves to get very muddy in the pasture! He is a very versatile horse who can be ridden by a range of riders at different levels, and is very fun to show. Merlin is adored by many different riders.
-submitted by Jr.Co. Emmy with input from campers during the summer of 2006
The following description was submitted by one of Merlin's favorite riders, Jess:
Merlin is an awsome pony! he is about 14.3 hands, and he is 7 years old. I have showed merlin for the past 2 years at Longacres. Merlin can be skittish at somethings, like a jump on the side of the ring, but if you push him, he will go by it, your just have to show him what it is and tell him it is ok. Merlin Jumped as high ad 3 feet and does beautiful flyings, you just have to ask him the correct way! I showed him as "One in a Million" why this show name because Merlin is really one in a million, Lillian who goes the first half of the summer showed him as "Tickled Pink". Merlin is a very easy horse to get going squeeze and he will go.He just get scared somtimes... he is still a baby so little things scare him. But thats ok he is a great horse! If you do come to longacres the one horse you have to ride is merlin!
Jess N :)
Tovah's description of Merlin: Merlin- Merlin is definitely one of Longacres’ best ponies right now. We got him in 2001 when he was a 3 year old and hadn’t done much more than play around in the pasture. He is extremely friendly and willing, making him a pleasure to train. In 2004 he will be 6 years old (our baby is growing up!!). He has learned an incredible amount since we first got him… everyone loves to ride him. He even showed at the fair the past two summers. He does occasionally spook, but it is never anything big. He is extremely fun to ride and he’s great on the trails.
Jess's 2002 description:
Merlin -
If you want to a great pony to ride at camp this is the pony! Merlin is a 4 year old Arab/Throughbred.he had had so many show names "Somebody's Mystery"was my favorite.I showed him last year the whole 2nd session. He jumps 2 "9 and does flying lead changes! And he is only 4! it was his first time at the Erie County Fair, he was a little afraid but he over came his fears by the end of the day. And the best part about him is that, he is the BEST horse at longacres!!
Zanzibar - In Retrospect
Zanzibar is very energetic and a lot of fun to ride, and a decent jumper. Lillian showed her last year, and says that Zanzibar was a mellow show horse. She only eats her grain if their is molasses on it... picky little pony. She is very sweet and lovable, and in love with Joker.
-submitted by Jr.Co. Emmy with input from campers during the summer of 2006
"I have been working on making my transitions smoother as she is very
sensitive to aides. Everyone is jealous because she looks so beautiful,
moves so smoothly and puts such energy into everything. "athletic" and
"floats" are the two most common comments." -submitted by Sharon W. in the fall of ’06 describing her experiences with Zanzibar while she is leasing her from LA in the off season Sharon has attended mother/daughter week for several years with her daughter Laura.
Horatio - Against All Odds
Horatio, also called Ho-Ho, is a lovable horse that can be a bit spazzy sometimes. He tries very hard but still has an unusual jumping style, hopping high over jumps sometimes. He is also very sweet and loving but doesn't like new kinds of treats unless somebody licks them first...
-submitted by Jr.Co. Emmy with input from campers during the summer of 2006
Sha-Bang - The Whole Sha-Bang
Sha-Bang is, in many people's opinion, the most gorgeous horse at Longacres. He is extremely fun to ride, in hunters or jumpers, and is very sweet. He also makes fishy sounds with his lips. He is a favorite here at Longacres.
-submitted by Jr.Co. Emmy with input from campers during the summer of 2006
Here's Erika's description of Shabang - she is keeping him at home over the winter!
Shebang- Shebang is a dark bay, 8 year old Thoroughbred gelding. He also likes to eat a lot!! But he's not so much of an easy-keeper like Lady! Although right now he is rather plump-looking with his winter fur and all! Shebang really enjoys galloping around the pasture, bucking and rearing. He can get really excited when you're riding him and tends to get a little quick. He's challenging to ride because you never know what he's going to do next! He tends to get bored easily but that can be fixed if you just do something to occupy his wandering mind! He is very fun to ride and jumps really nice too. He pops his flyings off like they're nothing and can sometimes be a really pretty show hunter! He fits right in at the end of the summer at the Erie County Fair!
Bobert - Discom-BOB-ulated
Bobert is a sweet horse for beginning riders. He can be a bit pokey at times, but is always very careful and mellow. He acts like an oversized puppy dog, and always takes care of his rider and is very reliable. Laura says that Bobert is like a big teddy bear.
-submitted by Jr.Co. Emmy with input from campers during the summer of 2006
i like to tell you something about my favorite horse Bobert!! he is a bay 15.3hh thoroughbred, and a total sweetheart!!! bobert is the best horse! he is so cute and will do anything you want him to do
Ginger - Lasting Impression
Ginger is very sweet and an amazing ride. At the last Longacres show she was shown both hunters and jumpers and did excellent in each division. She does not like to be bothered while in her stall, but once under saddle, she is a favorite. She is a very cute pony with great conformation. She is a beautiful jumper who is always very careful and has nice knees, and especially loves to do jumpers.
-submitted by Jr.Co. Emmy with input from campers during the summer of 2006
The story behind her show name from Meghan:
She earned her show name because we wanted to buy her in 2003 but were unable to buy her then. I thought of her every time I drove near her barn and checked up on her the next year to see if there was any way she was still for sale. She had left a lasting impression on me and I wanted her for Longacres! As you can see we got her so the name only seems appropriate!
Quantum Leap is by far the most amazing horse I have ever ever ridden!! He's
a total sweetheart around the barn and lets you kiss him and hug him and
make weird smoochy noises and whatever, and he just puts up with it with a
little horsey rolling of his eyes :) But when you get on top of him, the
whole game changes, and he is SO powerful and SO incredible and SO amazing
and SO energetic to ride!!! He's really challenging to ride, and you have to
always keep him busy and focused on his work, or else his little,
ahem...."expressions of delight", shall we say (a.k.a quantum leaps!) will
take over and you're in for a little sailing! But I totally fell in love
with his personality and energy and power and yes, even the quantum leaps,
this summer! Quantum is the most amazing horse ever!!!!
-Submitted by Jr. Counselor Emmy H. fall of ‘06
Quantum - Quantum Leap
Quantum is an amazing horse, but a few riders this year have learned that he needs to be kept thinking when he is ridden, or else he will leap! He is Emmy's favorite horse here, and Kelly also really likes him.
-submitted by Jr.Co. Emmy with input from campers during the summer of 2006
Below - A description of Quantum by his most regular rider, Tovah: Quantum- I don’t know what else to say about Quantum besides he has the biggest heart ever. He is a jumper, and an excitable, exuberant one at that. In 2004 he will be 12 years old and it will be his fourth summer of showing. He could be a bit more careful over the jumps sometimes, but he can out-run and out-turn most of the competition! He is a powerful horse and when you ride him you can really feel the energy underneath you. Quantum does have a few quirks (leaping, breaking cross-ties, etc!), but he will always try his hardest to do what is asked of him and he is extremely talented.
Brody - Last Enchantment
Brody, a new horse here at Longacres, is the favorite of our senior counselor, Lillian, who describes him as a lovable, sweet horse, like a pet in the barn! He is very sweet and willing to ride, and has lots of energy. He is also improving fast over jumps. Jen says that he has very nice transitions, and is a sweetheart!
-submitted by Jr.Co. Emmy with input from campers during the summer of 2006
Justin - Just Infallible
Justin is the best horse ever according to Carly, who recently showed him, and Lillian, our senior counselor. He has a very controlled canter... being an ex-racehorse. He gets a little excited about jumping, but is always very sweet to ride.
-submitted by Jr.Co. Emmy with input from campers during the summer of 2006
hey i just wanted to write to you about Justin for the "Meet the Horses"
Justin is an awesome TB gelding that came last summer. He was off the track but was trained to walk, trot, canter ( not always picking up his right lead), and jump X-rails, and small verticals. At the end of the first session he was picking up both leads, and we were jumping 2'6" courses with him. Justin is an awesome horse, beginners and mire experienced riders can ride him and he is very good for both!!
~Mandy
Oh Star, what can I say…this is the best pony EVER! Being very versatile, she can do hunters beautifully or even jumpers if you get her going. She may seem pokey and lazy, but she is a great pony who is willing to do anything for her rider. Wanting to please, she is easily the best pony ever. We came to find out she is also a very smart one! She knows how to unlock herself out of her stall! Her gorgeous markings and sweet personality make her one of the easiest ponies in the barn to fall in love with. Without fail, she is a great eye catcher at shows and will always get many second glances. She is a great all – around pony who your daughters will all be able to enjoy. She is great at cross rails and small jumps for the younger and less experienced kids, but can also pop right over three foot jumps…no problem! Despite what many people say, I believe she is the BEST pony not only at Longacres but in the whole entire universe of ponies. Because this needs to be an honest evaluation of this pony, I must add that she can get a little moody. That is quickly fixed with a hard love tap. Once you show her who is boss, she wont question you. She also does have a tad bit of a belly…but don't listen to anyone about that, it DOES NOT hinder her ability. She has a very smooth trot and canter, and as you can tell… is a joy to ride! Being very very interested in her food if there is any in her stall, she may not always show her gorgeous face all the time, but don't get her wrong, she knows she's gorgeous, and she loves people! She IS the best best best best best best best best pony everrrrrr!!!!!!!!!! I hope everyone really really wants to ride her!!
-submitted by Jr. Counselor Kim S. fall of ‘06
Star - Wishful Thinking
Star is an escape artist and has unlatched her stall several times at camp this year. She can also do special jumpers at 3'3". She has a marking on her face that looks like a fish, so some mean people call her fish girl. She is "slightly chunky". Also, Star has some heaves, which are currently under control. Star is very cooperative with lots of people around her.

Tovah's Star description: Star- Star is another great Longacres pony (you can thank Meghan for her!!). She is a flashy little paint who needs a little schooling once in a while because she IS a pony mare, haha, but most of the time she is a lot of fun to ride and jump. She takes a little bit of leg, but once you get her listening she is very responsive. In 2003 she did very well at shows, including the fair! She is a pony that most people enjoy riding.
Brownie--(a.k.a Pony Express, Charlie Brown, and Brown Cow)
Below: More Brownie descriptions from previous years: Our great all-around wonder horse, Brownie, on a pond day! Brownie is truly an all-around horse. He is one of our most reliable and safe horses with beginners, yet willing to jump up to four feet with advanced riders. He loves the water, as you can see in this picture and is one of the most sought after horses whenm we do a pond day exercise. He is excellent in the hunter and equitation ring, and can turn on a dime when you ask him to perform as a show jumper. (His inclination is to take it easy, so it takes a good rider to get the best out of him in speed classes, but his talent is second to none. I wish I had fifteen Brownie's !!!!
Following is a copy of an e-mail I just got from 1998 and returning for 1999 LA rider, Claire. "Hello Tom-
Brownie is Pony Express. You called him Charlie Brown. Also, You should put a picture of me & Brownie up. U could put one up from the hunter class we won and one of one of the jumper classes we went in. Yup. That's what you should do. Is Megan still @ longacres? Tell her hi.
See ya later- Claire Taylor
Brownie - Charlie Brown
Brownie is the favorite of many beginning riders here, and is one of the sweetest and mellowest ponies here, although he is also an excellent jumper. He is also a wonderful trail horse, and wakes up on trails. He is also utterly adorable! Nicknamed brown cow, he is described as "totally perfect" by Laura.

Julie/Meghan comments- "Charlie Brown" "He has the best gaits out of all of them!" "He loves the water."
"The best pony in the world!" -quoted from a Longacres rider, Joetta .
Below - Tovah's Ebony description: Ebony- Ebony is one cool pony. In fact, she is one of my favorites. Sure, she does have that pony mare attitude, but you just have to let her know that you’re in charge and that you’re not going to let her push you around. Once that is established, she is extremely fun and a blast to jump. She is still young and has only been at Longacres for two summers so far (2004 will be her third year). 2003 was a good year for her. Her jumping became much more solid and consistent, she became proficient with her simple changes, and started work on her flying changes.
Ebony - Tsk-Tsk
Ebony is a good jumper and has a very smooth canter which people love to ride. Although her barn manners can be a little lacking, she is pleasurable to ride. Annie showed Ebony in hunters at the last show here at Longacres and won overall champion of her division!

Kingsley - Take 5
Kingsley is a reliable, "wise" old man, but is still very responsive according to Madeline, and has very nice collection. He is an old show horse, and shows it when the day comes. At the last Longacres show, Madeline rode him to a reserve champion in Hunter Hack. He pops his jumps sometimes, but is a dependable jumper.
